Tomb Sweeping Day:Honoring Ancestors and Embracing Spring

April 5, 2026 — Qingming Festival, also called Tomb-Sweeping Day, is celebrated in China and by Chinese communities worldwide, a time for remembrance and spring renewal. As one of China’s 24 solar terms and a traditional festival, it falls between April 4-6, when temperatures rise, rain increases, and nature revives.
The festival blends solemnity and joy: families sweep ancestors’ tombs, offer flowers and food to show respect, embodying filial piety. Modern customs are simplified, with eco-friendly flower offerings replacing joss paper burning.
It is also a time to enjoy spring: people go for outings, fly kites and plant trees. Some fly kites at night with small “god’s lanterns,” adding a festive touch. Rooted in ancient rituals, Qingming is a cultural heritage connecting past and present, reminding people to mourn the departed and cherish the present.
Overseas Chinese hold simple ceremonies to honor ancestors and stay connected to their cultural roots during the festival.
