A 5% TiO₂ Price Difference May Not Mean a 5% Cost Difference

When purchasing TiO₂ for white masterbatch, comparing the price per ton is easy

But the real question is: How much does that TiO₂ actually cost you in your final formulation?

A lower-priced TiO₂ may require a higher loading level to achieve the same opacity or whiteness.

Differences in dispersion, tinting strength, particle characteristics and processing behavior can also affect the final formulation.

For example, if one TiO₂ grade costs 5% less but requires a higher dosage to achieve the same performance, the apparent saving may become much smaller — or disappear altogether.

That is why experienced masterbatch producers often look beyond the quotation price and evaluate cost per unit of performance.

A practical TiO₂ evaluation should consider:
• Whiteness
• Opacity / hiding power
• Dispersion
• Processing behavior
• Required TiO₂ loading
• Final masterbatch cost

For TiO₂ suppliers, the goal should not simply be to offer the lowest price.

The more useful question is:

Can the grade deliver the required performance at a competitive overall formulation cost?

This is also why sample testing remains important before making a supplier change. The lowest price on a quotation sheet does not automatically mean the lowest cost in production.
